Courses of Russian as a Foreign Language

Textbooks of Russian as a Foreign Language

The textbooks, “5 Элементов” ('5 Elements'), used by the teacher of Russian as a foreign language follow clear systematic approach and take into account the ability of a student to grasp the knowledge of Russian language at each stage of the learning process. The material applies the successive approach “from simple to complex” topics and grammar structures and, in so doing, develops the students’ skills in all four areas of language usage: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Материалы Having said that, it's also worth noticing that the teacher consistently includes various other sources of the language use, among which are: newspapers, fairy tales, narratives, magazines, interviews, programs, etc.

On the whole he believes that there are several necessary aspects to study materials to be called effective. These are:

  • Firstly, it is the hierarchy and sequence of the material. There are no unreasonable “jumps” from easier to more difficult information and vice versa. Certain succession should be obvious in all stages.
  • Secondly, the inner sections are joined together in a manner, which allows one to see a logical transition from one stage to another.
  • Thirdly, the time suggested to study one unit accords its volume and complexity.
  • Lastly, the courses apply, so called, “frequency principle“, i.e. material that is used in language most often (both lexical and grammatical) comes first.

Since “5 Elements” textbooks deem satisfactory with all mentioned criteria, the teacher uses the material as the base in the learning process.
